Report from Kilns Apologetics Conference posted by Henry B. Smith Jr. MA

ABR Temple Mount Sifting Project veteran and volunteer Greg Gulbrandsen manned an ABR booth at the Kilns Apologetics conference in Oregon. Here is his report, with pictures:

Up to 600 people attended the Second Apologetics Conference in Bend, Oregon on February 19 and 20th. This year's speakers included such apologetic luminaries as Dr. Craig Blomberg, Daniel B. Wallace, Dr. Craig Hazen, and Michael Caba. The conference was held at Westside Church in Bend, OR. Two of the top New Testament scholars in the country, Dr. Craig Blomberg and Dr. Daniel Wallace, were the main speakers. Craig Hazen and Mike Caba covered several of the breakout sessions. The topic was the reliability of the New Testament and covered such matters as the historical reliability of the Bible, the accuracy of the manuscript copies, archaeology, science, cults and more.

Many folks stopped by the ABR table and snapped up copies of Bible and Spade, information on upcoming ABR events, and inquired about archaeological-centered apologetics.---Greg Gulbrandsen

Kudos to Greg for his service to the Kingdom of Christ and his commitment to the ABR ministry!

Pharaoh Akhenaten’s Mummy Identified posted by Henry B. Smith Jr. MA

Two years of DNA testing and CAT scans on 16 royal mummies conducted by Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities gave the firmest evidence to date that an unidentified mummy - known as KV55, after the number of the tomb where it was found in 1907 in Egypt's Valley of the Kings - is Akhenaten's.

Jerusalem Wall Dated to Time of Solomon: UPDATE posted by Henry B. Smith Jr. MA

February 24, 2010, we reported that Eilat Mazar publicly announced that a wall uncovered in Jerusalem should be dated to the time of Solomon. Since then, some of our Christian brethren have critiqued this claim, and are urging some caution in jumping to conclusions of certainty concerning the date. Please see these links from Todd Bolen and Leen Ritmeyer for further background, positive critique and examination.

From the February 24, 2010 ABR Website:

Israeli archaeologist Eilat Mazar said Monday that ancient fortifications recently excavated in Jerusalem date back 3,000 years to the time of King Solomon and support the biblical narrative about the era. Others dispute her dates. Hopefully, a solid answer will be revealed in time.

Australia Attempts to Ban Creationism in Private Schools posted by Henry B. Smith Jr. MA

The South Australian Non-Government Schools Registration Board seeks “to effectively ban the teaching of creationism.” In short, even teaching the evidence for evolution fully and fairly would not be enough to qualify for registration if a school decided to also permit its students to be exposed to even the possibility that the Bible’s account of creation might be true. Nor would they be allowed to tell them that this is supported by highly qualified scientists who have repeatedly shown that the same evidence that is interpreted to support evolution makes, overall, even more scientific sense when one starts with the proposition of the Bible’s truth.

Nor could science teachers in schools under the South Australian restrictions even use the controversy to teach their students in science classes critical thinking skills. They could not use the debate to explain to students how science works in relation to the past, and how two ways of looking at the world each try to make sense of the evidence within their framework.

Biblical Manuscript Pieces Reunited posted by Henry B. Smith Jr. MA

Two pieces of a seventh-century manuscript of the “Song of the Sea” (Exodus 15) have been united and are on display in Israel’s National Museum. Separated across centuries and continents, they were reunited for the first time in a joint display recently, thanks to an accidental discovery that is helping illuminate a silent period in the history of the Hebrew Bible.
