“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but
one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. And everyone
who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain
a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.” -- I Corinthians 9:24-25
The Apostle Paul used athletic terminology to convey
spiritual truths in his epistles. These images included running, boxing,
wrestling and chariot racing. This practical presentation will examine the word
pictures in five passages from Paul's epistles that are illustrated by the
Isthmian Games near Corinth. These intense athletic competitions took place
every two years. Mr. Franz will show archaeological discoveries that depict various
athletic events, arenas for competition, ancient coins and mosaics. Life lessons will be drawn from the word pictures for the life
of the believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. This is an amazingly practical
presentation combined with archaeological evidences from the time of Paul.
Athletes
were rewarded with celery crowns, but the Christian runs the race with eternal
life as the reward!
