“There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets of stone that Moses put there at Horeb, where Yahweh made a covenant with the people of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt." I Kings 8:9

“And the ark of God was captured, and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.” 1 Samuel 4:11

“Go now to my place that was in Shiloh, where I made my name dwell at first, and see what I did to it because of the evil of my people Israel.” Jeremiah 7:12

Biblical references, historical connections and archaeological findings have come together to identify the ancient Israelite city of Shiloh, located in the hill country of Ephraim. Shiloh was the center of Israelite religious life and the home of the Ark of the Covenant and the Tent of Meeting for several centuries. The actual location of the Tabernacle at Shiloh has also been proposed, based on recent discoveries.

Psalm 78:60 and Jeremiah 7:12-14; 26:6, 9 indicate that Shiloh was destroyed and abandoned as a result of God's judgment. The archaeological findings dramatically demonstrate that Iron Age I Shiloh was terminated in a fiery destruction. All this dramatic evidence of fire can likely be associated with the destruction of Shiloh by the Philistines after they defeated the Israelites near Ebenezer in the mid-eleventh century B.C. Gary Byers walks the viewer through the evidence, leaving us confident once again that the Bible’s history is trustworthy.
