Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” Matthew 24:1-3
The Olivet Discourse recorded in Matthew 24 and Mark 13
presents Jesus speaking in the role of an Old Testament prophet, declaring the
signs of the end of the age. Much like the OT prophets, Jesus presents a vision
that includes elements which describe a fulfillment in His immediate historical
context, but which is also intended to describe futuristic events that will be
fulfilled at the end of time. Such near-view / far-view prophetic
pronouncements are a consistent feature of end-times prophecies found in the
OT. In this powerful presentation, Dr. Scott Stripling explores the
archaeological evidence from the First Jewish Revolt, clearly revealing the
elements of the near-view fulfillment of Jesus’ final prophecy, and which are
illustrative of the final climactic fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecy at the end
of the age. Included in this engaging and challenging presentation is a
discussion of the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple, evidence from the First
Revolt, and connections between ABR’s excavations at Khirbet el-Maqatir, Israel
and the destruction of Jerusalem by the Tenth Roman Legion.
